"Nigeria troops kills 50 boko haram members"

"In the latest in a series of firefights with the Boko
Haram, the
Nigerian Military issued a press release that
suggests they have
won the latest skirmish in confronting the group
in recent days.
The release, issued by Chris Olukolade, Major
General and the
Director of Defense Information issued this
statement.
“Troops conducting (the) anti-terrorists campaign
in North-
Eastern Nigeria have successfully averted (an)
attempted
massive raid on villages in Borno, and Adamawa
States, during
the weekend. The terrorists who were on their
way to attack
selected communities, were ambushed by troops
along Biita, in
Borno State, on receiving (an) intelligence report
of the terrorists’
intention (s).
“The attack was launched on the terrorists as
they filed out of the
forest to embark on their mission at about 10pm
on Saturday.
Over 50 terrorists died in the fierce encounter that
ensued, while
30 rifles, 36 Hand Grenades, 7 Machine guns, and
11 Rocket
Propelled grenade tubes were captured by the
troops. Also
recovered from the terrorists were over 3,500
rounds of
ammunition, 6 smoke grenade canisters, and
locally fabricated
guns as well as 4 vehicles used by the terrorists
in the foiled
attack.
“The four soldiers who were wounded in the
operation are
currently receiving medical treatment in the
military medical
facility. (A) Cordon and search (effort) is ongoing
in the general
area.
It is not clear if international assistance from
France, Britain, China
or the U.S. to the Nigerian military played a role
in this
confrontation. The use of Drones, both manned
and unmanned,
and other military assistance to the Nigerians has
surfaced in
recent weeks, as the search for the nearly 300
schoolgirls
continues. Yet, intelligence here played a major
role in the location,
weaponry, troop numbers, equipment, and which
towns that
were targeted by the Boko Haram, that resulted in
what appears
to be a successful confrontation by Nigerian
forces over the recent
weekend."

We Were Arrested & Our Plane Grounded In Kano. Amaechi

"The Rivers state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, on
Monday recounted his ordeal and those of his
colleagues in Kano on Sunday after a former
Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido
Sanusi, was named the new emir of the powerful
Kano emirate.
Mr. Amaechi and a few other dignitaries were in
Kano to pay condolence visits to the Kano state
government over the death of Emir Ado Bayero.
But sources also said Mr. Amaechi and a few
other chieftains of the opposition All Progressives
Congress also poured into Kano after receiving
intelligence that some northern traditional rulers
sympathetic to the ruling Peoples Democratic
Party, PDP, were putting pressure on the
kingmakers and Governor Rabiu Kwankawaso to
overlook Mr. Sanusi and appoint his rival to the
coveted throne.
Responding to a PREMIUM TIMES enquiry on
Monday morning, Mr. Amaechi said after visiting
Governor Kwankwaso, he, along with other
dignitaries, made for the Aminu Kano Airport
where his chartered aircraft was parked.
He said immediately his team entered the airport
buildings preparatory to boarding the plane back
to Abuja, authorities locked all the doors to the
complex, holding him and his colleagues hostage.
The plane was also impounded, he said.
“The Kano governor called the airport
commandant that we should at least be allowed
to leave the building but the commandant refused
saying he had an order from above not to let us
out,” the governor said. “We had to force one of
the doors open to get away.”
He said after they escaped from the airport, the
team devised a means of hurrying out of Kano for
fear they might be attacked by thugs sponsored
by the federal government.
“So we quickly got a car, bought fuel and started
driving towards Abuja. We sold a dummy to the
airport people and a few others that we were
returning to the Kano Government House. The
governor was also expecting us. But we were far
gone. I personally drove the car and all of us had
to switch off our phones so no one would know
our whereabouts.
“I drove for five hours and we arrived Abuja at 2
a.m. We were not afraid of armed robbers or
anyone attacking us on the road. We were only
afraid that the authorities could plant people on
the road to waylay and attack us. But thank God
we arrived safe.
In the car Mr. Amaechi drove from Kano to Abuja
were a former governor of Gombe state, now
Senator Danjuma Goje, a former governor of
Kwara state, now Senator Shaaba Lafiagi, and a
former Acting Chairman of the Peoples
Democratic Party, Abubakar Baraje.
“I have been shouting that we are in a
dictatorship, people thought I’m joking or
exaggerating,” Mr. Amaechi said. At least we can
all see what is playing out.

How "Misdiagnosis" Killed Akunyili

"After surviving several rumours of her death, a
former Minister of Information and
Communication and erstwhile Director General of
the National Agency for Food and Drug
Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Professor
Dora Nkem Akunyili, bowed to ovarian cancer
early yesterday.
Meanwhile, her death was blamed on
misdiagnosis by some doctors in the United
States (US). The doctors were said to have
claimed she did not have cancer after her
Nigerian doctor’s diagnosis to the effect she had
the sickness.
The Cable, an online medium quoting a family
source, yesterday, blamed misdiagnosis for
Akunyili’s death.
According to the source, when in 1998, the former
Minister was the Zonal Secretary (South-east) of
the Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund, Nigerian
doctors gave her what many of her family
members considered to be a health scare. They
said she had a growth and needed surgery.
The source narrated: “Akunyili, then 44, decided
to travel to the United States, first to get a
second opinion and then undergo the prescribed
surgery. The bill for the medical trip was $17,000,
including $12,000 for the surgery. During pre-
surgery check-up in the US, the doctors told her
the Nigerian doctors had made a wrong diagnosis
and that she did not need any surgery.
“It was said to be a minor issue that medication
would solve. She thanked the doctors and, to
their surprise, said she was going to return the
money meant for the surgery to PTF. That was
strange. Nigerian government officials had
devised a way of making sure such monies were
not returned to the treasury.
“The hospital informed the PTF, under the
leadership of Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari,
about one honest Nigerian they had found.
Buhari, himself a straightforward person, was very
impressed. He wrote a letter to Akunyili
commending her honesty. NAFDAC Then came
2001. President Olusegun Obasanjo wanted to
appoint a director-general for the National Agency
for Drug and Food Administration and Control
(NAFDAC) and asked for the recommendation of
an honest Nigerian pharmacist. Akunyili’s name
promptly came up.
“Someone who had heard about her PTF record
recommended her. There was a little problem, a
Nigerian problem. Objections were raised that the
minister of health, Prof. ABC Nwosu, was an Igbo
from Anambra State and NAFDAC, being a
powerful agency under the ministry, should not be
headed by another Igbo from Anambra. It was
also argued that the market for fake and
substandard products were controlled by the
Igbo, with Onitsha – also in Anambra State – a
major centre for the illicit business. She was
going to protect “her people”, the antagonists
said.
“Obasanjo, stubborn to the cause, ignored the
observations and appointed her. She went on to
do a credible job and ended up as one of the
most outstanding public officers in Nigeria’s
history, celebrated locally and globally. She had
lost a sister to fake drugs, and that was perhaps
the impetus she needed to go on the offensive.
Misdiagnosis Meanwhile, Akunyili always went
abroad for check-ups and she was always given
an all-clear. She continued to look robust and
energetic, and took up another government job as
minister of information and communications.
“But on July 13, 2013, something strange
happened to her. She was preparing to travel to
the United States to receive an award. The
following day was her birthday. Her 59th,
precisely. Then she fell ill. She was physically
weak and having pains. She decided to go ahead
with her trip and attend to her health in the
United States. It was while she was there that
new checks were carried out.
“Alas, she had cancer. The original diagnosis in
1998 was right. But the diagnosis at the point of
surgery was wrong. She became seriously ill and
there were fears she could lose her life. She was
in the hospital for months and only returned to
Nigeria this year when the doctors said she was
improving. Her last public appearance was at the
National Conference in Abuja, where she was a
delegate. Pictures of a frail-looking Akumyili soon
went viral on the net.

Gunmen kidnapped 20 Women Near Site Of Schoolgirl Abductions

"Suspected Islamist gunmen abducted about 20
women from a nomadic settlement near the
northeastern Nigerian town of Chibok where more
than 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped two months
ago, a local official said.
The ethnic Fulani women were taken after the
assailants attacked a settlement known as Garkin
Fulani at midday yesterday and ordered the
women into their vehicles at gunpoint, Alhaji Tar,
a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, said
in a phone interview. They were driven off to an
unknown location, he said.
“We got the information that they went there and
took away the women at the time none of the
males were there,” Tar said. “The three young
men they met there could not help the women, as
the gunmen also ordered the three of them to
enter the Hilux vans and took all of them away.”
Boko Haram, the Islamist militant group whose
insurgency against Nigeria’s government has
killed thousands of people over the past five
years, abducted more than 200 girls from a
school in Chibok in April. The U.S. and U.K. sent
teams to Nigeria to help the government find the
schoolgirls, and Israel and France have pledged
assistance."

Ejike Uzuenyi "To Replace" Injured Echiejile

Ejike Uzoenyi will be recalled to the Nigeria
World Cup squad after Elderson Echiejile was
ruled out to injury.
Team sources informed KickOffNigeria.com that
Echiejile's muscle tear will side-line him for at
least two weeks, and officials were unwilling to
take the risk of travelling with an injured player to
Brazil.
The Rangers man, who wept in the team bus on
the way back to the hotel in Philadelphia after
being informed that he had been cut, will now
have a chance to show that he is good enough..

deported Nigerian students to return to school in Canada

Two Nigerian students who were deported for
violating terms of their student visas will "return to
study" in Saskatchewan.
Kay Adebogun, who is the senior immigration
counsel for the women, told CBC News the
Canadian government has allowed them back into
the country.
"I'm still of the opinion that they shouldn't have
been sent back for that simple error. So that was
why we needed to do whatever we can legally to
make this day happen," said Adebogun.
Michelle Stewart, a justice studies professor at
the University of Regina and an ongoing supporter
of the students, also confirmed the two were en
route to the city to continue attending university
classes.
Deportation orders
For a few weeks in 2011, Victoria Ordu and
Favour Amadi worked at a Walmart in Regina.
Both said they did not realize it was not
permitted under the terms of their student visas.
Soon after, they received deportation orders from
the federal government.
For more than a year, the women took refuge in
four different city churches after learning they
would be forced to leave the country.
On October 11, 2013, the two returned to Nigeria
voluntarily in the hope that doing so would allow
them to return to Canada later.
Public support
While the women took sanctuary, they received a
lot of support from people in Saskatchewan.
Rallies were held to raise support for them last
summer.
Since then, the Canadian government has
changed its policy and as of this month,
international students with study permits are
allowed to work off-campus.
At the time of their departure, University of Regina
president, Vianne Timmons, met Ordu and Amadi
at the airport and vowed to help the students
come back.
Their story also drew the attention of Liberal MP
Ralph Goodale, who took their case to the House
of Commons last fall and said the women should
be allowed to stay.
At the time, the federal ministers responsible did
not concede, despite the outcry from the girls'
supporters.
Ordu and Amadi are expected to arrive in Regina
from Toronto at approximately 6 p.m. CST
Saturday.
Adebogun told CBC News the girls' Nigerian
government scholarships have also been
reinstated.
Returning to the University of Regina
They two will start classes at University of Regina
the day after Canada Day, according to
Adebogun.
"They're so happy to be back, and looking
forward to starting their studies. And above all,
very very grateful to everyone who helped them
one way or the other to ensure they can come
back," said Adebogun.
He is unsure where the girls plan to live or if they
will pursue part-time work once they arrive.

Agency was not immediately available at the time

Sokoto state Approves N331m Sponsorship For 164 Students To Sudan

Sokoto approves N331m
sponsorship for 164 students to
Sudan
on june 07, 2014 at 3:06 pm in
news
Sokoto – The Sokoto State
Government said on Saturday
that it had approved N331.63
million for the sponsorship of
164 medical and engineering
students to Sudan.
This is contained in a statement
signed by the Information Officer
of the State Scholarship Board,
Malam Isa Shuni, in Sokoto.
It listed Khartoum College of
Medical Sciences, Afhad
University for Women, Nahda
International College,
International University of Africa
and National University as the
institutions where the students
would be admitted.
It said that the gesture was to
offer training to selected
students from the state in
selective fields of medical
sciences
According to the statement, the
gesture covers the cost of tuition,
registration, transportation and
other needs of the students.
The statement quoted the
Chairman of the board, Alhaji
Jelani Kalgo, as saying that Gov.
Aliyu Wamakko had since
approved the release of the
funds.
It said that the release of the
funds would facilitate easy take-
off of the programmes in
accordance with the provisions
and guidelines of the respective
institutions’ academic calendars.
“Kalgo was also quoted as saying
that the state government has
also given emphasis to the
sponsorship of female students.
”This will tackle the shortage of
female medical personnel
bedevilling the state’s medical
institutions.
“The benefiting students should
complement the government’s
gesture by dedicating themselves
to their studies and by being
good ambassadors of the state
and Nigeria,” the statement said.

Hazard rules out PSG switch

"When asked by if he likes being handed
the number 10 shirt at Chelsea, Hazard replied:
“Yes, I have always appreciated it.
"It's a nod of approval and it's nice. It's my
favourite number, which I wore in Lille, then with
the national team - it is the number of one of my
idols, [Zinedine] Zidane."
Asked if he knew who PSG's number 10 is, the
Belgian said: "I don't know. The place is not free.
So I cannot go."
The 23-year-old has been involved in a number of
regularly exchanged differences of opinion with
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho since the
Portuguese's return to England - specifically on
Hazard's defensive work rate and the team's
tactics
.
However, last season's PFA Young Player of the
Year insists he wants to remain at the club,
adding his desire to focus on his country's World
Cup campaign.
"For the moment, I just want to focus on the
World Cup. For the moment I have a contract
with Chelsea and I don't want to leave the club,"
he told reporters.
Hazard played 35 times for Chelsea in the Premier
League last season, scoring 14 times, while
netting three more in the Champions League and
the Super Cup."

Should someone In A Relationship Give his/Her Contact To Admirers???

Ladies "especially the attractive ones" have a lot
of men walking up to them on a daily basis. Is it
ideal for a lady that has a boyfriend/Fiancé or
even husband to give out her contact details to
men that approach her telling her they admire
her? Considering the fact that relating with this
admirer regularly could cause a distraction in your
relationship "especially when your male partner is
the very jealous and possessive type."

US to Opens TV Channel In North To Combat Boko haram

WASHINGTON — The State Department is
financing a new 24-hour satellite television
channel in the turbulent northern region of Nigeria
that American officials say is crucial to countering
the extremism of radical groups such as Boko
Haram. The move signals a ramping up of
American counterinsurgency efforts to directly
challenge the terrorist group, which abducted
nearly 300 Nigerian schoolgirls in April.
State Department officials acknowledged that
setting up an American-supported channel could
prove challenging in a region where massacres,
bombings and shootings by Boko Haram are
common, and where the American government
and Western educational programs are far from
popular. The group has been known to attack
media organizations in Nigeria.
The new television channel, to be called Arewa24
— arewa means north in the Hausa language — is
financed by the State Department’s Bureau of
Counterterrorism, and it is expected to cost about
$6 million. State Department officials would
discuss the program only on the condition of
anonymity, and offered sparse information about
it. But details have emerged in publicly available
contracting documents and in interviews with
people familiar with the effort.
The project was started last year and is run in
Nigeria by Equal Access International, a San
Francisco-based government contractor that has
managed media programs sponsored by the State
Department in Yemen and Pakistan that
encourage youth participation in politics, in
addition to countering Islamist extremism. Work
on the project is nearing completion, but
broadcasts have not yet begun.
Video | Boko Haram Kidnapping Tactics, Explained
Some background on the Islamist group that has
been trying to topple Nigeria’s government for
years.
State Department officials insisted that the
Nigerian government was aware of the television
project, and that it had not planned to hide
American support for the program, which has not
been previously disclosed. “However, U.S.
sponsorship will not be advertised or promoted,”
a State Department official said.
The goal of the channel is to provide original
content, including comedies and children’s
programs that will be created, developed and
produced by Nigerians. State Department officials
said they hoped to provide an alternative to the
violent propaganda and recruitment efforts of
Boko Haram.
Many foreign policy experts, while applauding
State Department programs to counter the efforts
of Boko Haram and other extremist groups, said
the new satellite project faced several challenges
in a region with low levels of infrastructure, public
services, literacy and security.
Access to electricity is limited in many rural areas
of northern Nigeria, and few people own
televisions. While some people might be able to
view the programs on cellphones, a U.S.A.I.D.
official recently told members of the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee that Boko Haram
has been targeting cellphone towers to reduce
access to communication services in the region.
Graphic | Five Years of Attacks by Boko Haram in
Nigeria
Jacob Zenn, an Africa analyst at the Jamestown
Foundation in Washington, said other issues could
also limit the effectiveness of the channel. Most
members of Boko Haram speak Kanuri, a
language also spoken in Niger and Cameroon,
though the channel’s programming will be in
Hausa. Mr. Zenn also said that most new
members of Boko Haram are not Nigerians, but
recruits from countries bordering Nigeria.
“Most Nigerians living in the region are aware of
the destruction caused by Boko Haram, and they
are opposed to the group,” he said. So any
program that focuses just on people in the region
would most likely be offset by the fact that the
recruiting pool is transnational.
The terrorist group has had success in using
video messaging, which is a key tool in its
propaganda war against the Nigerian government
and in gaining new recruits. The leader of the
group, Abubakar Shekau, used a video message
to claim responsibility for the abduction of the
schoolgirls, who are from the town of Chibok in
northeastern Nigeria. Mr. Shekau regularly posts
videos on YouTube that feature sermons, appeals
to recruits and footage of attacks.
The kidnapping of the girls “demonstrates the
need for a strong and durable alternative narrative
to the destructive narrative of Boko Haram and
other violent extremists,” a State Department
official said.
Video | Boko Haram Leader Releases Video The
leader of Nigeria’s terrorist group Boko Haram,
Abubakar Shekau, said his group was fighting to
reinstate a medieval Islamic caliphate in northern
Nigeria.
Documents show that the television channel is to
target youths, “either subtly or explicitly,” with
Hausa-language programs that deliver “themes
that reject political violence and violent
extremism,” but do not include “news or political
reporting.”
The State Department is expected to finance the
channel for two years.
Details about the program have come to light in
the wake of attempts by the State Department
and the United States Agency for International
Development to create Twitter-like social media
programs in countries such as Cuba and
Pakistan.
The Cuba effort was widely criticized after The
Associated Press reported that it was set up to
encourage political dissent on the island. Officials
said the effort was part of American public
diplomacy programs to encourage political
discussions, not a covert program to overthrow
the government.
But unlike the social media programs, the satellite
television channel is part of an overall
counterterrorism effort designed to delegitimize
extremist ideology through the use of social
media tools like Facebook and YouTube, as well
as blogs, radio programs and online video games.
State Department counterterrorism officials also
engage with terrorist groups in online forums and
in the comment sections on media websites. The
effort is intended to reach what one State
Department official called the “middle-grounders
— the fence-sitters, the sympathizers and passive
supporters.”
The United States has long had a media presence
in northern Nigeria. The Voice of America offers
general Hausa-language news programs in the
region, but State Department officials said the
new project would go beyond simply providing
information. In addition to the broadcasts,
officials said the project would provide training to
journalists in the region, including women, who
would then be able to produce their own video
content."

Breaking:biafra Group Strikes In Enu,attempt To Seize TV Station, kill Policemen?

"Members of Biafra Zionist Movement, BZM a
Pro-Biafra group, led by Barrister Benjamin
Onwuka have launched another attack in
Enugu.
No fewer than 20 members of the group on

However, police sources revealed shortly
after today's incident that Onwuka and 12
members of his group have been arrested
by a team of security operatives who gave

Meanwhile the State Police Spokesman, Mr.
Ebere Amaraizu, DSP, has said he is
assessing the situation and would formally
brief the media later.
It would be recalled that same group had
claimed responsibility for the attack on
Government House, Enugu on March 8
holding the place to ransom for nearly four
hours.
After the attack,
they threatened to stage another attack
and this time with a well armed team, which
would be extended to Owerri, the Imo State

New CBN Governor, Emefiele, Scraps Charges On Bank Deposits

"The new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria,
Mr. Godwin Emefiele, on Thursday scrapped
charges on cash deposits, just as he promised a
gradual reduction in the interest rates on lending.
He said a zero charge on deposits would
encourage investment attitudes among the
savers, while a reduction in the lending rates
would make credit cheaper for potential investors.
Emefiele, while unveiling his blueprint for the
banking sector and the economy, said his vision
for the country was to create a central bank that
would be professional, apolitical and people-
focused.
He spoke to journalists at the CBN head office in
Abuja and noted that the two initiatives of
achieving a reduced interest rate and deposit
charges were part of his 10-point agenda for the
central bank.
The CBN boss said, “We shall pursue a gradual
reduction in interest rates. A comparison of
selected macroeconomic aggregates from some
emerging market countries including South Africa,
Brazil, India, China, Turkey, and Malaysia
indicates that Nigeria has one of the highest
Treasury bill rates.
“Such high rates create a perverse incentive for
commercial banks to simply buy virtually risk-free
government bonds rather than lend to the real
sector.”
He noted that while the task of reducing the
interest rate and maintaining the exchange rate
were very daunting twin goals, the CBN would
work assiduously with all stakeholders to device
countervailing measures that would ensure that
the goals were mutually achieved.
“To enhance financial access and reduced
borrower cost of credit, we would pursue policies
targeted at making Nigeria’s treasury bill rates
more comparable with other emerging markets
and by extension, pursue a reduction in both
deposit and lending rates,” said the CBN
governor.
Speaking on the country’s payment system,
Emefiele said his vision was to align with the
policy of his predecessor on the cash-less policy,
noting that the policy would go nationwide on
July 1 this year as earlier scheduled.
He, however, regretted that during the course of
the pilot scheme, a lot of complaints were made
by customers, particularly regarding the charges
being imposed for cash deposits.
This, according to him, has resulted in customers
devicing various means to avoid the charges such
as opening of multiple accounts and other
disingenuous behaviours with the aim of
undermining the objectives of the policy.
Given these outcomes and in order to better
reflect his goal of having more cash under the
control of the CBN, Emefiele said, “All charges on
deposits are hereby stopped with immediate
effect. Charges on withdrawals, in view of their
eventual elimination, remain sustained at the
current three per cent for individual transactions
exceeding N500,000 and five per cent for
corporate transactions exceeding N3m.
“Currently, these fees go entirely to the
commercial banks. However, going forward, the
central bank shall determine what percentage of
these fees on excess drawings that will be
redeemed by the bank while the rest shall be
remitted to the CBN.”
On the exchange rate policy, the CBN boss said
his vision for the economy was to maintain its
stability, adding that there were no immediate
plans to devalue the naira.
He argued that in view of the high import-
dependent nature of the economy, a systematic
depreciation of the naira would literarily translate
to considerable inflationary pressure with
attendant effect on macroeconomic stability.
As a result of this, he said, “Under my leadership,
the bank will continue to focus on maintaining
exchange rate stability and preserve the value of
the domestic currency.
“We will sustain the managed float regime in the
management of the exchange rate, as this will
allow the bank to intervene when necessary to
offset pressures on the exchange rate. To support
this strategy, we will strive to build-up and
maintain a healthy external reserves position and
ensure external balance.”
Emefiele also said he would include
unemployment rate in the CBN’s monetary policy
decisions; maintain exchange rate stability and
aggressively shore up foreign exchange reserves;
and strengthen risk-based supervision mechanism
of Nigerian banks to ensure overall health and
banking stability.
He said, “The bank would begin to include the
unemployment rate as one of the key variables
considered for its Monetary Policy decisions.
“In the interim, we would continue to maintain a
monetary policy stance, reflecting the liquidity
conditions in the economy as well as the potential
fiscal expansion in the run-up to the 2015 general
elections.”
According to him, others programmes are to build
up sector-specific expertise in banking supervision
to reflect loan concentration of the banking
industry; to consider and announce measures to
effectively address the anomaly in macro-
prudential space; abolish fees associated with
limits on deposits and reconsider ongoing practice
in which fees associated with limits on
withdrawals accrue to banks alone.
The CBN governor also announced plans to
introduce a broad spectrum of financial
instruments to boost specific enterprise areas in
agriculture, manufacturing, health and oil and
gas.
He said the central bank would establish Secured
Transaction and National Collateral Registry to
improve access to information on borrowers and
assist lenders to make good credit decisions;
build resilient financial infrastructure that would
serve the need of the lower end of the market,
especially those without collateral.
On financial system stability, Emefiele said his
administration would sustain the effective
management of potential threats and avoid
systemic crisis.
“We hope to engage the fiscal and political
authorities, as well as other stakeholders to
improve our policy buffers, which will further
create space for the bank to implement monetary
policy using its limited instruments,” he said.
Emefiele also said the Apex bank would enhance
its supervisory purview over the banking system
as well as strengthen macro-prudential regulation
by improving supervisory diligence, ethical
standards as well as highest level of
professionalism in carrying out on and off-site
supervision activities.
To achieve this, he said, “Banks shall be enjoined
to proffer remedial actions where weaknesses are
observed in Risk-Based Supervision examination
reports so as to avoid further build-up of non-
performing loans.
“Where banks proffer inadequate remedies, the
CBN shall advance its own solutions and insist on
compliance.”
He also emphasised the need to pursue a zero-
tolerance policy on fraudulent borrowers, noting
that the bank would collaborate with commercial
banks to significantly improve the credit culture in
the banking system."

Tambuwal Blasts Abuja Police Boss, Mbu, Over Protest Ban

Tambuwal blasts Abuja Police boss, Mbu, over
protest ban
Chinenye Ugonna
Published: June 5,2014
The speaker says the culture of impunity in
governance must be halted.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives,
Aminu Tambuwal, has lambasted the
Commissioner of Police for Abuja, Joseph Mbu,
for ordering a ban on protests urging increased
government action for the release of abducted
schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State.
The ban, imposed by Mr. Mbu on Monday, was
reversed a day after following widespread
condemnation.
The police high command denounced Mr. Mbu’s
action, saying protesters were free to hold daily
sit-in, provided they remain peaceful.
The protests have held for more than a month
since more than 200 girls were kidnapped by
Boko Haram in Borno State.
In a speech marking the end of the third
legislative year, Thursday, Mr. Tambuwal said Mr.
Mbu’s “audaciousness” in ordering the ban
showed Nigeria’s “descent into the pits of
reckless disregard for the rights of citizens”.
The speaker said the ban was “unacceptable” and
vowed that the House will treat the police
commissioner’s order with the “seriousness that
it deserves”.
“To buttress our descent into the pits of reckless
disregard for the rights of citizens, the nation
recently woke up to the sad dawn of a
Commissioner of Police acting on his own
initiative, without clearance from his superiors
and in flagrant contravention of the clear
Constitutional guarantees of the right of citizens
audaciously purporting to ban the peaceful
assembly of Nigerians,” Mr. Tambuwal said.
“This is an unacceptable abridgement of the
rights of Nigerians to freedom of speech,
association and peaceful assembly, and this
House must treat this matter with the seriousness
it deserves.”
A controversial figure, Mr. Mbu was drafted to
Abuja as police chief after a turbulent run in
Rivers State where he maintained a testy
relationship with the governor, Chibuike Amaechi.
While in Rivers State, the police commissioner
repeatedly clamped down on protests and
meetings defying widespread criticisms of his
conduct.
Mr. Mbu has been accused of being
unprofessional and doing the bidding of President
Goodluck Jonathan.
Mr. Tambuwal said the “fact that the office of the
Inspector-General of Police felt compelled to deny
the action of the Police Commissioner only goes
to underscore the audaciousness of the conduct
of the Police commissioner.”
“As important as all our duties and functions as
the legislative arm in a democratic government
are, none is more important than our duty to
protect and preserve the rights guaranteed to all
Nigerians by our Constitution. Any attempt by
anybody to infringe on the rights of Nigerians is a
direct affront to this House. This House must
therefore take necessary measures to ensure that
such sacrilege does not repeat itself anywhere in
Nigeria.
The culture of impunity at the highest levels of
governance in Nigeria must be brought to a halt,”
he said.

Pro-biafra Group On Mission To Topple Enugu Government-cp

Pro-Biafra group on mission to topple Enugu govt
—CP
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr.
Mohammed Abubakar last night said members of
the Biafra Zionist Federation, BZF, who invaded
the Enugu State Broadcasting Service, ESBS,
yesterday morning were on a mission to topple
the government.
Abubakar spoke while parading the 13 members
of the federation including their leader, Benjamin
Igwe Onwuka at the state police headquarters.
Apart from Onwuka, Abubakar said other
members of the federation arrested included
Paulinus Uzoegbu, Michael Oleinya, Ndubuisi
Nnamchi, Bethrand Obiekwe, Kelvin Ekeh,
Abraham Ugwu, Chukwuma Alogius, Ijaga
Sampson, Josephat Nwodo, Nwonu Fidelis and
Uduma Uduma.
The commissioner said: “When they went to the
ESBS, they gained entrance into the studio and
wanted the the workers to give them access to
make a live broadcast to the people of Nigeria.
“In the broadcast they had on a CD rom where
the details of what they wanted to tell members
of the public.
They made a summary of what they had on the
CD rom, on a sheet of paper and the highlight of
it are; an appeal calling for all boys in Obiagu,
(Enugu) to come out, all boys from Ogui (Enugu)
to come out, all boys in Enugu State to come out;
they also asked students to come out, those
people with KekeNapep (tricycles) to come out.
They wanted to order all businesses closed today
(yesterday); all schools to be closed, all markets
to be closed and all government officials to
surrender all property in their possession before
mid-day. You can see these people were on a
mission of trying to over throw the government
and it is something that we will never tolerate.
“Recall that in March this year, they had attacked
Government House, Enugu. We had earlier
declared their leader (Onwuka) wanted. The same
group of BZF led by their leader, Benjamin
Onwuka invaded the ESBS with the intention that
after the broadcast, they will set the place ablaze.
“They carried with them a lot of arms, machetes,
25 litres of petrol, 46 empty beer bottles and one
BZF flag and some CDs. The purpose of going
there with petrol and bottles, you know when you
put petrol inside a bottle and shake it and throw
it into a building, it will inflame. They went there
also with guns because when the policemen
confronted them, they shot a sergeant and killed
him and in the process of trying to prevent them
from setting the place ablaze, they also had a
casualty, one of them was shot dead. About 13 of
them were arrested including the leader, Benjamin
Onwuka.”
Abubakar then warned that any group of persons
or individuals planning to foment trouble in
whatever form that would cause breach of peace
to desist from doing so, as it would not be
tolerated.
Efforts made to speak with the suspects were
rebuffed as the Commissioner insisted that doing
so “will mean giving them opportunity to say
what they wanted to announce in the live
broadcast.

"G7 leaders warn Russia of fresh sanctions over Ukraine"

Leaders of the G7 industrial nations meeting in
Brussels say they are prepared to impose further
sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine.
A joint statement condemned Moscow for its
"continuing violation" of Ukraine's sovereignty.
The G7 summit is the first since Russia was
expelled from the group following its annexation
of Crimea in March.
On Thursday, leaders are set to discuss the global
economic outlook, climate change and
development issues.
Although Russian "President Vladimir Putin" is not
at the Brussels summit, he will hold face-to-face
talks with some G7 leaders - not including US
President Barack Obama - in Paris afterwards.
However, both Mr Putin and Mr Obama will attend
a ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary
of the D-Day landings in France on Friday.
While in Poland on Wednesday, President Obama
warned Moscow against what he called its "dark
tactics" in Ukraine.
Diplomacy has intensified to try to resolve the
biggest crisis in years between Russia and the
West.
Lols I think the west is absolutely doing great job on Russia" now what is your opinions?

Softbank unveils 'human-like' robot Pepper."

"Softbank says it plans to launch the robot
commercially in Japan next year
Japanese firm Softbank has unveiled a robot
called Pepper, which it says can read human
emotions.
It uses an "emotional engine" and a cloud-based
artificial intelligence system that allows it to
analyse gestures, expressions and voice tones.
The firm said people could communicate with it
"just like they would with friends and family" and
it could perform various tasks.
It will go on sale to the public next year for
198,000 yen ($1,930; £1,150).
"People describe others as being robots because
they have no emotions, no heart," Masayoshi Son,
chief executive of Softbank, said at a press
conference.
"For the first time in human history, we're giving
a robot a heart, emotions"

FG. To Establish A Nigerian Development Bank In 2015 – Okonjo-iweala

+The coordinating minister for the economy and
minister of finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has
said that the federal government is fine-tuning
plans to establish a Nigerian Development Bank in
2015.
The minister stated this in Abuja yesterday during
a dinner organised by the African Development
Bank (AFDB) to flag-off events marking the 50th
anniversary of Africa’s premier development
finance institution.
Okonjo-Iweala, who was a guest speaker at the
occasion, paid tributes to both the World Bank
and the AfDB for strongly supporting Nigeria’s
aspirations on establishment of a development
bank to fast-track economic diversification and
sustainable and inclusive growth.
The event attracted dignitaries including Cross
River State Governor Lieyel Imoke, representatives
of Kaduna State Government and the honorable
minister Federal Capital Territory (FC). Other
dignitaries present included resident coordinator f
the United Nations System in Nigeria, Mr. Dauda
Toure, former vice-president of the AfDB, Mr. Bisi
Ogunjobi, Chairman of the bank’s administrative
tribunal, Justice Alfa Belgore (retired) and
managing director and CEO, Nigerian Export-
Import Bank, Mr. Robert Oryia as well as a
representative of the European Union Delegation in
Nigeria.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the AfDB’s Nigeria
country director, Dr. Ousmane Dore, said that “
from a modest capital base of$250 million and a
staff base of 10 individuals, the AfDB has has
evolved to become Africa’s undisputed premier
development finance institution, commanding the
respect of much older peers like the World Bank
and the International Monetary Fund” Dore told
his audience that the AfDB started operations in
Nigeria in 1971 with a total investment of about $
5billion agriculture, infrastructure, education and
social development adding that the portfolio now
includes environment, peace and security building.

"I think this is a good news, or what do you guys think?"

Cecilia Ibru Moves To Recover Forfeited Assets As AMCON Objects

The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria
(AMCON) has objected to a suit by the convicted
former Managing Director of the defunct Oceanic
Bank Plc, Mrs. Cecilia Ibru, seeking to retrieve the
assets she forfeited to the federal government on
her conviction in October 2010.
Following a plea bargain arrangement, Ibru was
convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos and
was sentenced to six months imprisonment.
Under the arrangement, she forfeited assets
worth N191 billion comprising 94 properties
across the world including the United States of
America, Dubai and Nigeria to AMCON.
Ibru, who sued for herself, the Ibru Group and
three others, among others, asked the court to
stop the Attorney-General of the Federation and
AMCON from further taking any steps towards
implementing the terms of the plea bargain and
settlement agreement leading to her conviction.
She also sought an order directing the parties to
return to status quo prior to November 12, 2013,
when AMCON obtained an ex-parte order in
respect of the assets.
Other plaintiffs are Sidochem Industries Ltd, Edgar
Sido and Dr. Francis Sido.
Ibru alleged that AMOCN “mischievously obtained
an ex parte order from the court” on November
12, 2013, without disclosing material facts in the
plea bargain agreement.
Shortly after the case was filed in April, trial
judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed, on April 29,
2014, granted an interim injunction restraining the
two defendants (AGF and AMCON).
The judge also ordered the defendants to appear
in court to show cause why the order to maintain
status quo should not be made.
Yesterday, the AGF was not represented but
AMCON’s lawyer, Ademuyiwa Balogun, urged the
court to dismiss the suit for lack of jurisdiction.
Balogun also opposed an application by Ibru’s
counsel, Mr. Ade Okeanya-Inneh (SAN), seeking a
preservative order restraining the defendants
pending the hearing of the suit.
“We are opposed to that application for a
preservative order, the reason being that we are
challenging your Lordship’s jurisdiction. With the
greatest respect, your Lordship’s jurisdiction is
only limited to decide whether or not the court
has jurisdiction to entertain the suit,” Balogun
argued.
He said there was no urgency requiring the court
to make any preservative order.
“The cause of action arose in November 2013, the
plaintiff only approached this court in March 2014,
it is a clear admission that there is nothing urgent
to protect,” he said.
Justice Mohammed agreed with Balogun and said
he would not make any preservative order when
his jurisdiction to entertain the suit was being
challenged.
He adjourned to June 22 for the hearing of the
notice of preliminary objection by AMCON.

" How Often Do You Visit Your Hometown?"

Most people I know have not visited their
hometowns in years. Personally, I have not been

reason? My grandparents are no more so the

aunts residing there. So, how often do you visit
your hometown? When was the last time?

"A vivid retrospective voyage
into June 2013 best explain exactly how
this trip began. Unlike every other journeys,
this comes with a special poise and alluring
aura. I cannot have forgot so quickly the
excitement and euphory that greeted the
idea that I was going to don the most
coveted and dignified NYSC kits. It signalled
the birth of a new phase, one envelope with
uncertainties, anxiety and the desire to pull
a surviving and adaptative instinct in an
entirely new environment. Despite knowing
next to nothing about what lied in waiting
for me, I couldn't care less as I was
engulfed with the intense desire to serve my
country. The exhilarating feelings that
surrounds serving my fatherland alone
provided enough template to find solace in
the face of any reality that beckons. The
three-week regimented camp experiences
coupled with the tensions that predates
collection of posting letters and the joy/
disappointment(as the case maybe) that
trailed PPA revelations. CDS routine, PV
signing, monthly alerts, and other wonderful
experiences remain one I will continue to
relish for years to come. Thank you God for
making me pull through this phase unscath.
Take charge of my next phase. I'm good to
go.

Congratulations dear compatriots.
All glory to the Almighty God for making you
people a living witness of this historic day after
you render a selfless service to your fatherland.

Police Did Not Ban Peaceful Rallies: NPF

Police Did Not Ban Peaceful Rallies

*Only advisory notice issued
The Police High Command wishes to inform the
general public that the Force has not issued any
order banning peaceful assemblies/protests
anywhere in Nigeria. It notes however that
against the backdrop of current security
challenges in the country, coupled with a recent
intelligence report of a likely infiltration and hijack
of otherwise innocuous and peaceful protests by
some criminal elements having links with
insurgents, the Police only issued advisory notice,
enjoining citizens to apply caution in the said
rallies, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory
and its environs.
Reminding citizens of the earlier position of the
Force on peaceful rallies, which the Police High
Command regards as the constitutional and
democratic rights of Nigerians, the Inspector-
General of Police, IGP, M D. Abubakar, CFR, NPM,
mni, psc, stresses the need for the organizers of
such rallies to ensure that they seek proper
advice and guidance from the Police before
engaging in any such exercise so as to avoid any
unpleasant circumstances. The IGP calls on the
general public to see the present position of the
Force as a necessary sacrifice for the peace our
nation needs, as security is a collective
responsibility.
Consequently, citizens are strongly advised to
reconsider their positions on the issues of rallies
and protests in FCT until the existing threats are
appropriately neutralized and removed from our
midst by relevant security agencies.
Meanwhile, the IGP reassures citizens of the
commitment of the Force to the protection of
lives and property and advancing the course of
democracy in Nigeria.

Prayer City: MFM Bars Residents, women In Trousers

Mountain of Fire and Miracles
Ministries has barred residents of
host communities from passing
through its Prayer City in Magboro.
The development has dimmed the
hope of residents of the no fewer
than 17 communities, whose access
road was recently blocked, that the
church may reopen the road.
Also, women in trousers, who have
other business in the Prayer City,
located at Magboro on the Lagos-
Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State,
have been barred from passing
through the camp ground.
The MFM had on Saturday, May 10,
blocked the access road to
Magboro, Magada, Makogi, Abule
Odo and Unity Estate among other
communities, a move the residents
claimed was not only surprising, but
was done without consultation with
them.
The Ibafo Police Division had
intervened in a planned protest by
the residents on May 17, promising
that the issues involved would be
resolved.
The Divisional Police Officer, Mr.
Jimoh Salawu, in appealing to the
residents, called for a meeting of the
representatives of the Community
Development Associations in the
area, where he asked the
communities to write a letter
outlining their demands.
Salawu had promised that the
church would attend to the
demands of the residents, chief of
which was the re-opening of the
blocked access road instead of
relocating the ‘road’ to a
waterlogged area, which has
become a nightmare with the
increasing rainfall.
Three weeks after the DPO’s
intervention, the church barred the
residents from passing through its
estate, which is the only access road
to link the expressway.
Operatives of the new security outfit,
which the church engaged, on
Saturday informed the residents,
especially the motorists among
them, that starting from Monday this
week, they would no longer be
allowed to pass through the camp
ground.
While the new security operatives
said the order came from the
“church management”, one of the
old security officers claimed that the
house owners in the church estate,
where the road passes through,
took the decision not to allow the
residents of adjoining areas to pass
through the camp ground.
“The new guys don’t understand
what is going on here. The people
living in the estate said they don’t
want anyone to pass through this
area. That is why they have locked all
the gates so that there will only be
one road for resident of this estate;
not for outsiders,” said the security
man, who would not want his name
in print.
Meanwhile, the church has started a
“strict enforcement” of its law
against women putting on trousers
and passing through the camp
ground.
Some women, who were on their
way to the Ecobank in the Prayer City
on Monday recounted their
experiences in the hands of the
security men at the main gate of the
camp.
They wondered why the church
must “embarrass” women, who
were on their way to a “bank and
not the church auditorium.”
One of them, who spoke to our
correspondent on condition of
anonymity on Monday, said, “See
the loose trousers that I’m putting
on. How does this offend anybody?
You can imagine the
embarrassment that I was subjected
to at the gate on my way here
(bank).
“They asked why I must wear
trousers to this place, as if I said I
was going to the church auditorium.
At least, they should have waited till I
want to enter the church.”
When contacted, the Assembly
pastor of the church, identified
simply as Pastor Irabor said, “You
are from where? Who sent you? Tell
PUNCH I have no comment. God
bless you.”
However, the Security Head of the
church, who gave his name only as
Mr. Lanre, told our correspondent
that the road in question was not an
access route for the public, adding
that security challenges informed the
barricade.
“The so-called access road is illegal.
It is part of the church property. If
we decided to block it, I don’t think
that is business of anybody. Can you
claim what does not belong to you?
They (communities) even went
ahead to stage an informal protest.
Attacks on public places in the
country have made it mandatory for
organisations to beef up their
security.
“We are not under compulsion to
share our property with the
communities. Regarding your
question on the social benefits the
neighbouring residents derive from
the church, I can’t comment on that.
But there are records of what we
have done for them,” he said.
Commenting on the women on
trousers, Lanre said the dress was
inconsistent with the doctrine of the
church.
He said, “Such women will be
barred from taking the road on the
camp that links to the expressway.

breaking News!! Pension: Akpabio Asks Assembly To Remove Controversial Sections

Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State
has said the state government has sent a bill to
the state House of Assembly requesting that a
section of the controversial state Pension Act be
expunged.
He also asked the lawmakers that the act reverts
to the status quo, according to a statement by
the government on Tuesday.
The statement said Akpabio stated this while
speaking with journalists in Lagos on Tuesday.
The part of the pension law, which was passed
by the House and assented to by the governor
last week, approved N100m medical allowance
for former state governors and N50m for their
deputies annually in retirement.
The Act also made other generous financial and
accommodation provisions for the state’s ex-
governors and their deputies, including a five-
bedroom mansion in either Abuja or in the state.
In his letter to the House, Akpabio said, “It is my
hope that with the excision of these sections from
the amendment, the agents of falsehood would
lift their siege on truth and not distract the good
people of this state from the task of the
Uncommon Transformation of our dear state.
“Let them remember that I am not a governorship
candidate. Instead of firing brickbats at me, let
them tell the good people of Akwa Ibom State
their plans for Akwa Ibom State.”
Akpabio added, “Because of the sponsored media
comments and misinformation of the members of
the public on the good intentions of Pension Act
by the few opposition elements in the state, and
because this government is a product of the
people, we have, as a government, decided to
forward a request to the House that those areas,
which the opposition has capitalised on to
misinform the people be expunged and the former
law that had been in existence be made to
remain the law.

Radamel facao to miss world cup

2 Jun 2014 23:34:00
Coach Jose Peckerman has confirmed that the
Monaco striker is not yet fit enough to play
competitively, which Amaranto Perea also drops
out because of a physical complaint
Colombia striker Radamel Falcao has failed to
recover from a serious knee injury in time to make
Jose Peckerman ’s squad for the World Cup.
The Monaco striker sustained ligament damage in
his knee while playing in a Coupe de France
encounter against Monts d'Or Azergues in
January, and though he was able to train with the
squad, he will not be risked for the summer’s
tournament.
“I don't want to say good evening because it has
been such a sad day. I have to announce that
Amaranto Perea, Luis Fernando Muriel and Falcao
will miss the World Cup. “Perea and Falcao
because of their injuries and Muriel as a technical
decision,” Pekerman told the press on Sunday.
"The doctors have been very clear: now is not the
time for Falcao to return to competition."
Clearly emotional, the striker added: "I do not
want to take the place of a team-mate who is at
100 per cent."
The ex-Atletico Madrid attacker had been fighting
a race against time from the moment he was
struck down, though when he returned to training
with his club in the final week of the Ligue 1
campaign there had been tentative optimism he
would be fit.
However, that has not been the case, and after
failing to feature in any of Colombia’s warm-up
friendlies to date, he will not be amongst the
playing party to travel to Brazil, where matches
against Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan await.
Colombia squad in full:
Goalkeepers: David Ospina; Faryd Mondragon;
Camilo Vargas.
Defenders: Juan Camilo Zuniga; Pablo Armero;
Santiago Arias; Eder Alvarez Balanta; Mario
Alberto Yepes; Carlos Valdes; Cristian Zapata.
Midfielders: Carlos Sanchez; Abel Aguilar;
Alexander Mejia; Freddy Guarin; Juan Guillermo
Cuadrado; James Rodriguez; Juan Fernando
Quintero; Aldo Leao Ramirez; Victor Ibarbo.
Strikers: Jackson Martinez; Adrian Ramos; Teofilo
Gutierrez; Carlos Bacca.

The worst yet??? Rihanna attends fashion show in see-through sheer dress

I think the reason she gets away with this easily
is because she's one of the biggest pop stars in
the world. Imagine if it were a reality star,
struggling singer, upcoming actress or video
vixen dressing this way, people will be too quick
to call her trash. Not impressed with this dress.
The singer wore this see through custom-made
shear embellished halter dress by Adam Selman
to the Council of Fashion Designers of America
Awards yesterday. The dress is embellished with
216,000 Swarovski crystals and she rocked it
with a matching sparkly turban. She wore a flesh
colored thong to cover her herself up but had no
bra on. She was honoured with the Fashion Icon
Award.

'Nigerian men are not good lovers'- actress Christabel Egbenya says

Actress Christabel Egbenya says Nigerian men
are not good lovers and do not respect women.
Ladies read what she said below and tell us if
you agree with her a little...I don't! :-)
“I don’t think they are good lovers. Most of
them don’t take women very serious and
they don’t respect women. Just few of
them have feelings and respect for their
women. Most feel money is everything
there is, to make a lady happy. To me,
money is not everything. Real men don’t
buy their women over with money” she
actress said in a recent interview
